Homes

Today you will learn about apartments and homes Come on now I well show you the apartments. It takes 1,500 people to build one apartment and it takes two months to make it look like an apartment. The only people that live in an apartment is the poor and some
rich people . They have night watchman who make sure that the buildings are locked. They are very concerned about the fires too because the apartment is propped up with planks of wood to keep it from falling down on the apartments .
Senator follow me and I will show you the homes . The rich live in a very different
condition from the poor people . The first roman room in the house is called an atrium. It looks like an open room and had a pond at the bottom of it. In the house the rich made the slaves do everything like make the floors. They are made out of mosaic. Mosaic is glass that is broke and it is put on the floor. Thanks senitor for looking at the roman apartments and roman homes by.

Hello how are you doing today did you have a nice trip? Today I will guide you through the boats and markets. Please follow me. First thing I would like to talk about the boats. The boats were made from wood. Each boat was 180ft long. The boat was powered by people with oars .They had 18 to 24 oars on each side of the boats.Romans carried different things on the boats. The boats carried things like olive oil,and other goods. They had a pot to put the oil in. They took beef, corn, glassware, lead, leather marble, perfumes, purple dye, silk, silver, spices, timber, tin, and wine from Arabs and Indus valley. Now you know about the roman boats. Now you can learn about the markets. The markets sell pig heads porridge; fruit, potatoes, and tomatoes. They hold the market in the forum under the apartments. Porridge is oatmeal. The markets were made of different things like stone and wood. People would set up stands that looked like tents and sell their goods under them. Now you know about the markets in our roman times.

Roman Roads

Good morning senator I look forward to guiding you through the roads. Senator lets start with what materials we used on the road. First we dug a very straight ditch. Straight is important because it makes the trip go faster. We filled the ditch with many different layers of materials. We place sand on the bottom of the ditch. Gravel is then packed into the sand. This makes a steady base. On top of this we put rocks to pave the road. We build the roads at a slant so the water would run off. Now I have showed you the materials we used on the road let me show you who builds the roads. The soldiers are in chage of building the road. They plan the road and do a lot of the work. Many times slaves are used as well. Slaves are people that come from barbaric lands. Hope you like Rome senator.

Good morning senator how is your day. I will be your guide, lets go look at the villa. The villa workers grew a lot of wheat for the people to make food out of flour. They grew wheat and made it into flour. They made flour out of grinding wheat and used the flour for bread. Do you like the tour so far senator? Good now let’s go look at the olives. Here are the olives but close the gate when you walk in. The olives are crushed and made into oil The oil is used for more than one thing like olive oil for lamps and cooking. Thanks for stopping here senator. I hope you have a great day.

Entertainment

Thanks senator for visiting our great city. Today you will be
learning about entertainment. Here we are senator. We have arrived at our arena. The arena is 237x135 ft. It is 160ft high. The walls are made of stone formed into bricks. In the arena gladiators fight. We have three types of gladiators. Their names are Secutor, Velitis, and Retiarius. The different types of gladiators would fight with different types of weapons. The Retiarius would use a net and veltis would use a spear, and sector would use a sword and a shield .Now that I have shown you the arena lets move on to chariot racing. Chariot racing is a cart that is being pulled by horses or a horse. The max number of horses that could pull a chariot is four. They will still give you a lot of money even if you lose but especially if you win. The chariot races have sharp knives for cutting reins incase they crash in the race. Hope you had fun. Hello senator. I hope you hade a nice trip today. I am going to guide you through a roman temple. We have special permission to go inside today. Senator, first I would like to tell you about the biggest temple in Rome called the temple of Jupiter. You see senator there is a statue of a god inside every temple. Our priests have put them there to watch the temple. The temple of Jupiter is the biggest temple in Rome because Jupiter is the most important god. This is because he is the king of gods. He is the god of the sky. Come senator you must see the Pantheon. Senator there are statues of the gods all around the pantheon that gaze down at visitors who worship them. You know senator the dome roof on the Pantheon weighs about 5,000 tons and has a hole at the top to let in the light. Is that amazing or what? In conclusion senator there are many different temples in Rome. I hope you have a safe trip home.

Good morning senator. I will show you the library. First I will show you how to make a book. Before books were made on long scrolls made of papyrus. It is kind of paper. It was hard to fold scrolls out and in. We had to create the book. We flick thru the pages fast and we save hours. It easier to carry a few books then a bundle of scrolls. You should try it. Next I will show you who comes to our school. Only the boys that are rich go to school. They start going to school at six years old. The teacher beats them if they don’t remember their lessons. The teacher is a slave named a pedagogue. Girls don’t go to school they get taught by their mom. Thank you senator for letting me show you the library and school.

Weekly News

Dear Parents,

We have been learning so much in third grade this week. Read on to learn all about it. First we have been learning about the Roman Empire. Our class is working together to build a city out of sugar cubes. Each cube is equal to 10ft. We designed out buildings using the program sketch up from Google. Our city has everything you can imagine like a villa, an army base, an arena, a temple, a library, baths, apartments, stores, aqueduct, senator house, roads, and walls. We are having fun building our city. We are also making a news report about Rome.

Another thing we have been working on is math. This week we talked about square numbers. Our class took a test on subtracting 5 and 6. Most of us did ok but we could all use to continue to study.

Finally we sold lots of Hot Coco. We made about $80.00. Thank you very much Mrs. Browning, Mrs. Johanson, Mrs. Gormely for your help! We all did a great job selling and planning the fund raiser.

As you can see we have had a busy week. We all want to go home and take a nap.

Sincerely,

Your Third Grader
